After flying Radio Controlled Model Aircraft for many years and wanting to 'really fly' Ray took a keen interest in flying Ultralight Aircraft (RAAus previously Australian Ultralight Federation) in 1988 and began learning in earnest in 1989 with instructor Rod Birrell at Penfield (Sunbury, Vic) He obtained his licence in 1991 and continued on to obtain his Senior Instructor rating at Mangalore and Shepparton under the instruction of Ray Hill (Victorian Ultralight Centre).  After gaining his pilots Licence Ray obtained the Victorian franchise of the Ron Wheeler Sky Craft Scout (an early, single seat ultralight), Ray maintained the franchise gaining valuable experience but the aircraft was soon outdated by modern technology and the aircraft became less popular.

Ray opened Bendigo's first RAA school at Woodvale as Senior Instructor and operated as a satellite facility of Victorian Ultralight Centre (Ray Hill CFI) until he obtained his Chief Flying Instructor rating and opened Bendigo Ultralight School (now Bendigo Recreational Aviation School).  Approximately 10 years ago when the Woodvale airstrip closed Ray re-located the school to the current site at the Bendigo Airport.
